As the 2006 - 2007 snow recedes, damage to turf becomes evident. The snaking trail through the grass was caused by Voles. Voles are small rodents that live in fields during the spring and summer and move into your yard in the fall.

Voles set up residence under junipers and make these trails under the cover of snow. In most cases, damage like this is no cause for concern: the turf will fill in as spring approaches. Voles can cause serious damage to junipers by chewing off the bark, and girdling the stem.

The other problem we see here is gray snow mold fungus. This disease starts on unfrozen soil that is covered by snow for long periods of time. It is usually a weak fungus that dries out and dies quickly when exposed to air. The best solution is to fluff up the matted grass with a fan rake to dry out the turf.
